I know people who want to destroy the Catholic Church brick by brick because of the current sex scandal.

One of them grew up in the NE and met ex-Catholics who'd been traumatized by their experiences with the Catholic Church. But what hurt you as a boy isn't the only thing that can hurt people, and the further hurt in the cases of people growing up as lower class whites in the Fundamentalist churches is that nobody expects much of them. I've known at least two who went to the Catholics for their educations (my father's cousin Willie Callahan, who went to Georgetown and the Patrick County priest, who was born poor in the Shenandoah Valley).

SC law prohibited election of officials who didn't believe in God. We had a teacher who was probably a bit kinked. She had one girl lift her skirts so she could paddle the girl on her panties in front of the class -- and she really knew how to pick her targets until finally one kid burned down the school (fire started in her classroom), her church (fire started where she put on her choir robe), and something else (also connected to her). The town dropped prosecution because they finally realized they'd been tolerating her a bit too much. We had all understood that if we complained about her, the subsequent teachers we had would take it out on us (one student's parents transferred him to a private school). She also would ask people if they'd been to church. I was one of her victims, though I only got my palms whacked with a ruler, still in front of the class. She knew which children didn't have strong local support and target them until she targeted the kid who exploded.

She said that if I thought I hated people as a child, I would find out when I was an adult just how wrong I was. I'm 61, turning 62 next month, and I have never hated anyone as an adult to the level I hated her. As an adult, I can avoid really jerky situations. As a child, I was trapped. (I consider any adult to tell a child or adolescent that life will be worse when they're adults to be abusive -- and have come to the defense of young people who have to hear that in my presence).

College town. Her son had been married to the college president's daughter. None of my family will willingly live in South Carolina and I dropped a Facebook "friend" who moved to Clemson to teach.
